Request for information on Richmond College, Galle

Richmond College, which was founded in 1876, is proudly celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2011.  The Richmond College Old Boys Association intends to bring out a magazine, tracing the history of the College from its inception to date.  It is also intended to establish a Museum at the College premises which will be a repository to a wealth of material, publications, documents and records in regard to the school.
A special Magazine  and Museum Committee has been appointed for these purposes.The Committee hopes to produce a magazine which is as comprehensive as possible and would accurately reflect the illustrious record of the College, beginning as a  missionary school and rising to be a national educational institution of excellence, second to none in the island.In our efforts to gather material, we respectfully request the help and support of old pupils, staff members, parents and others connected in any way with the school.
Special attention may be given to the following :-
  1. Old Richmond College magazines;
  2. Publications brought out by various clubs and societies of the College
  3. such as “Sisu Puvatha”, “Samaja Seva”, “Vidu Thilina”, “Nivahana”, “Annoor Alhidaya”, “Jeevaya”, “Richmond Scout”, “Piyavi Sithuvili”, “Disi Risi Seya”, “Tharaka”, etc.
  4. College Prize Giving Reports ( prior to 1980 – Senior and Junior );
  5. Reports of the College Inter-House Sports Meet and other Sports events and achievements and Reports of special projects;
  6. Richmondites who have done outstanding service in various spheres such as Education, Medical, Engineering, Defence, Administrative, Financial Management, Performing Arts, Foreign Service, etc.
  7. Names of Darrell Medal winners from 1968 – 1977 with documents to substantiate the achievement;
  8. Information on Medals and Trophies won at Prize- Givings and any photographs pertaining to such achievements;
  9. Scouting and Cadeting;
  10. Any documents pertaining to the House System of the College;
  11. Wall Papers which had been brought out from time to time;
  12. Any information, memories and anecdotes pertaining to the following would also be useful -
      • Hostel Masters, employees in the hostel, special receptions, lunches and dinners, RCBLA which was held every Friday, Hostel Chapel, Hostel Sickroom, Hostel Bell, Hostel Prefects  and any other information pertaining to the hostel;
      • Teachers and non academic staff members who performed a notable service to the College;
      • The Richmond Hill Sinhalese School (Vernacular School);
      • The Wednesday Evening Club, Richmond Week, Apollo Club and other such activities;
      • Special landmarks, trees, etc., in the school garden (e.g. etamba tree, pus wela, toku tree, motadeliya tree, sal tree, Scouts Club House, Bakery, Farm, Carpentry shed, Tennis courts, School Bell and Belfry,  the Well on the ground the Kannangara hall has been built);
      • Films and documentaries about the school;
      • Rajaskanda Estate;
      • Excursions, camps, shramadana and social service activities organized by the College;
      • College Flag, Tie, Blazer, Uniforms, Badges, Mementoes, etc.
      • College Songs;
      • College traditions and religious activities;
      • Any photographs, references in newspapers, periodicals and books pertaining to the College;

        Until the museum is properly established, a portion of the OBA office has been set apart, equipped with a cabinet and computer, to keep old documents and other material which are collected,  safely.
